Is it legal to use a knife as self defense?

I live in Louisiana and I’m 17 years old. This means that I have no weapons licenses of any kind. If someone were to try and fight me using a weapon of any kind or aimed a gun at me, am I allowed to pull out my pocket knife and kill them with it? If not, at what point does it become legal to kill in the name of “self defense” or “defense of others”?

It’s not legal for you to kill them unless it is your only option for you (or a third party) to survive or you view it as your only option, with a reasonability clause ie; your assumption must be a reasonable assumption to make at the time. So if they are attacking you with a cuddly toy then no it is not legal to kill them, if they are attacking you with a stick, or gun or they are saying they are going to kill you while trying to choke you etc. It is also illegal to carry a concealed weapon (not just a gun but anything that will be primarily used as a weapon) in Louisiana. You would have to justify your carrying a knife firstly and secondly it could not be of a type that is clearly just a weapon, ie blade over 3 inches or switchblade (unless you only have one arm) or a knuckleduster/blade combo. So it would have to be a fairly inoffensive pocketknife. Plus if you killed anyone they would look through all your accounts like this and see that you are asking Q’s like this which would demonstrate malice aforethought ie; planning to kill when you are not in any particular danger at the time. If you did know about the danger in advance (ie someone threatened you) then you could not start carrying a weapon to defend yourself as there were other options available to you (don’t go out, go to the cops etc).

I personally got arrested up for carrying a butterfly knife when I was roughly your age and I really wish I hadn’t. It was totally unnecessary and frankly it is more likely to escalate any fight you get involved in into a killing. Not something you want. You will look back on this and think why did I want to do that and wasn’t it a stupid and childish thing to do.
