7)The length of glass plates are measured to the nearest tenth of mm. The lengths are uniformly distributed between 590.0 and 590.9
i.If we select a sample of 10 plates, what is the probability that less than 4 of them have length under 590.3?
ii.If we select a sample of 10 plates, what is the probability that 9 of them have length greater than the mean length?
iii.If we select 10 plates, what is the probability that only two have length greater than 590.6?

Because it’s a continuous uniform distribution, you can calculate the probabilility of the length being greater or less than any length. (this is a continuous distribution, so lengths are always greater or less, you don’t have to worry about the “exactly equals” case). I suspect that, given that, you can do the rest:

i. Each individual plate has a probability of 1/3 of being less than 590.3. So do the binomial distribution for 0, 1, 2 and 3 out of 10, (p=1/3, n=10), and add those four numbers together.

ii. Each individual plate has a probability of 1/2 of being greater than the mean. So (assuming “9″ means “exactly 9″) do the binomial distribution for 9 out of 10, (p=1/2, n=10).

iii. Each individual plate has a probability of 1/3 of being greater than 590.6. So (assuming “only two” means “exactly two”), do the binomial distribution for 2 out of 10, (p=1/2, n=10).
